The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has accepted upadacitinib for use to treat adults with giant cell arteritis. SMC has accepted upadacitinib for restricted use. The restriction means upadacitinib can be used to treat GCA patients where another medicine called tocilizumab cannot be used or has not worked well enough.

Note that this decision affects only patients treated in Scotland. The decision of the NICE appraisal for England has not been published yet. In Wales, NICE guidance on health technologies is subject to a funding decision by the Welsh government’s Minister for Health and Social Services.
