Good news on the insurance front: the EHIC card has been replaced by the GHIC card, and like its predecessor, it is free. (If a GHIC-application website requires a payment, then you have ended up at a scam site).
The new card has similar benefits and geographical coverage to the old EHIC, except that it no longer covers Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland.
